Tom Willis

Beginning with an interest in art from an early age, I have continued to explore and develop my creative passion over the years.  Through artistic evolution and discovery I have come to interpret the world with a contemporary and personal vision. My approach is direct and physical as well as spiritual.  Mystery, energy, emotional tension and color are all a part of what make these images work. I try to discover something new in each painting and communicate with others. These paintings evolve as I resolve the dynamics and relationships of the elements within the painting as well as the expressive statement. My work is a further development of the uniquely American school of Abstract Expressionism.

I am professionally and probably most importantly, self-trained and have centered most of my efforts on painting.  While studying art at East Carolina University and the University of NC at Greensboro, I had the opportunity to work with Francis Speight, Peter Agostini and other well regarded artists.

Selected exhibitions where I have shown work include:

  • Thesis show, ECU, 1968
  • Kinston Arts Juried Exhibit, first place, 1967
  • Witherspoon Art Gallery Masters Group Show, 1973
  • Winston Salem Contemporary Arts, group show, 1994
  • Charlotte Artists Guild, group shows, 1993,1994
  • Carolina Artists Studio Gallery, second place, 2000
  • Carolina Artists Studio Gallery, solo exhibit, 2001
  • Carteret County Arts Show, second place, 2005
  • Onslow County Arts, twice received the Clair Armstrong Endowment Award, 2006, 2008
  • Newbern Bank of the Arts, 2008
  • Clayton Fine Arts, solo exhibit, 2009
  • Skylight Gallery, group exhibit, 2010, 2012
  • Skylight Gallery, solo exhibit, 2011
  • Visual Art Exchange, 2012
  • Fine Arts Carolina, featured artist, 2013
  • Plieades Gallery, “Truth to Power” show, 2013
  • Wake Forest Univ. Medical Center, Commons Gallery, 2014
Over the years, my art has found a home in private and public collections across America and can currently be seen at Fine Arts Carolina, Mebane, NC and on my website:

Most of my paintings are abstract.  It is intentionally apparent that a person hand painted them, not a machine or electronic process, and that actual paint was used.  A certain immediacy is present in these works as I paint directly and the physicality becomes an important part of the expression.  These paintings reflect my passionate and emotional involvement with expressing the human experience.
